Trim and Refresh Your Way to Better Content: Sustainable Repurposing from a Digital Marketer’s Style Guide

Rachel from the Friends tv show.As Jennifer Aniston once famously said, “a haircut can change your life.” While a simple trim may not seem like a big deal, it can give you a fresh new look and make you feel like an entirely different person.

The same concept applies to strategic content marketing.

Just like a great hairdresser can give new shape and style to tired tresses, we as marketers can take a subject matter expert interview or thought leadership article and rework it into social snippets, long-form blog posts, video summaries, podcast transcripts and more.

This is how you can adopt a more sustainable approach to content creation, maintain audience engagement and avoid the marketer’s equivalent of a bad hair day — creative burnout.

Try this out: Take an SME interview, trim a little here, style a little there, and you’ve got six new pieces of content from one! Here’s how:

  • Build a Q&A for a niche newsletter blurb
  • Flesh out the interview to write a topical blog post
  • Pitch the topic to an industry publication and style it to fit their specs
  • Extract a quote from the Q&A and add it to a Canva template with the thought leader’s headshot or an abstract image for use on social media
  • Add a quote from the interview to a relevant webpage to give it additional flair
  • Use talking points from the interview to develop a video script, podcast topic or speaking pitch (wait, is that the sixth content idea or the six, seventh and eighth?)

Add these ideas to a content calendar for each of your SMEs each quarter to keep your content fresh on all channels.

Rachel from the Friends tv show. What else can you reinvent? You can always revisit old blogs or videos and breathe new life into them. Add relevant keywords, update anything outdated and change the tone or “voice” to better fit your brand style today. It’s a fun way to fill gaps in your content calendar by exploring your content archives. Look for interesting topics that deserve a makeover.
